Hello to everyone. One more middle aged Limey rider enjoying my '09 Thruxton with electric start and fuel injection but longing for the THUMP of my old Victor and the howl of my Rocket Three. Quote for the day... "Happiness is a smooth even tickover and a light chocolate brown electrode".

I live in southern Az and work on an island in the Arctic Ocean off the northeast coast of Alaska. 34 degrees and sleet right now. My first bike was a 69 Victor followed by a 71 Rocket Three when I lived in Tucson. I moved to Alaska in 79 and bought a 73 Trident. Sold the bike when I bought an airplane and now am back in Az without a plane but with my 09 Thruxton in red. I am considering the TOR pipes but I'm not sure if the exhaust note justifies the money and I don't know if I really need the performance boost. Any suggestions?

Welcome bro!!! What do you have for exhaust cans on it now? Opening up the exhaust will uncork the Genie. The note and performance will be to your liking. Mine is the original New Bonnieville with carbs and a 790 engine.
$hit this could morph into a can thread or a remapping thread,....I could go on.....
Welcome!!

The bike is dead stock and I like your phrase " uncork the Genie". I am already loving the bike but it is a little on the quiet side. I am planning a trip from Saint David, Az to Durango, Co and back down to the Mexican border on Hwy 191 in August. I will probably be glad I have the stock pipes for that trip just for noise after 300 miles a day. I have tried to think of an excercise to get my back ready for that kind of mileage on a Thruxton but having a truck run me over seems a little extreme. Any thoughts?

I don't think your back will bother you. but your butt might. I get numb butt near the end of each tank of fuel. I have rode just a little more than 300 miles a day and that is enough for me. The 250 to 300 range is plenty. Try it out,...You might go even longer. Let your body give you the signals. You might get a bit of a stiff neck on day 3 of a long ride but that will go away. Probably caused by the wind pushing back on your head.
It looks like hell but a piece of sheepskin (wool intact) folded double and put under your butt will increase comfort and extend range by 25%. Hmmmm,...Should start a new thread for comfort ideas on long trips.............

I have been thinking about the "gel seat" from Triumph. Does anyone have any experience with one of those? I like the sheepskin idea. I'm 6'3" and 270 pounds so I already look like a monkey trying to screw a football when I'm on the bike, maybe the height of the extra padding will unkink my legs a little on the rearsets.

Welcome.St David, huh?I passed thru there on the way to Tombstone several years ago,but don't remember much about it,except it's small.Damn,I wish I lived in a small town.I live in Mesa, which as you probably know,is a suburb of Penis,er,Phoenix,up here in the Valley of the Slum.
Don't worry about your back, you'll die of heat stroke about 40 miles north of Tucson.Seriously,I wouldn't consider a ride like that in the middle of the summer in AZ,at least, not if you're coming up thru the Valley.Maybe if you swing east, and go up via the Devils Highway to Utah, then cut over, you'll be out of the really bad heat.
When I had low bars on my BMW,I never had issues with my back on long trips, but instead with my shoulders, arms and neck. The Bimmer had a throttle friction screw,so I could alternate letting my arms down, and take the strain off my shoulders from time to time, but the neck thing was a real, well, pain in the neck, because you always have to hold your head in an upward facing attitude just to see where you're going. That's why I prefer more upright bars for long trips.Except for that,I'd prefer low bars, because I like to lean into the wind.
Yeah,I'd for sure put a few inches of extra padding on that stock seat. The sheepskin sounds like a good idea.I've heard good things about beaded seat covers, too, but I haven't tried one yet.As far as the gel seat goes,I hear they work pretty well, but if you park the bike in the sun, they soak up enough heat to burn the shit out of you,and they retain that heat for a long time. Anyway, have fun, take lots of pics, and post them here!
Cheers! Bruce
Edit: I just re-read your post, and I see you are going up the Devils Highway. That should be a farking blast.I envy you that ride.

Get the pipes you want, and enjoy the performance increase (and the added sound).

Don't bother paying hundreds for loud pipes, buy some cheap Vuvuzulas and attach those. Straight through, no baffles, choice of colours and designs, perfect!
