In 1979 I bought a brand new DT Yamaha, got it delivered still in the crate and built it up at home. Happy days! Yesterday I brought home an almost identical 1979 Yam DT175MX...... All original, unmolested and only one previous owner. Today I got the tools out on it and this is the result!!....... Everything I tore down was in really good order, not a nut or bolt out of place. Nothing bent, dented, stripped or rounded. A little winter project to keep me occupied! Lookin' forward to the rebuild now!! V.

This'll be worth watching. You're going to need a bigger shed!

Looks like it will be an interesting project, especially with the bike in fairly good shape. I do not envy those who take a ball of rust and try to make a motorcycle out of it. I have had a couple...I gave up before I began.

This thread stinks the high hell of 2T
You lucky devil Vent - brings back memories of the early 80's, sure half the couriers in Dublin rode them [into the ground]. A rare sight these days....happy rebuilding and no skint knuckles!

The project is coming on nicely now. Frame and swing-arm are all prepared for the powder coaters....... And the forks stripped ready for the rechroming works. After doing a lot of trawling of websites it would seem that parts availability is good, either original NOS stock or pattern stuff. I think I'll have a problem sourcing an original exhaust tho, as they're obviously much sought after. There's plenty in USA but a little on the heavy side to post!! We'll see. So far bought new forks seals, swing-arm bush set and taper-roller bearings for the head stock (seeing as all the original balls are scattered around the shed floor somewhere!) Oh, and a new seat cover is on it's way too. Next I'll dive into the engine I think. Its a long time since ive worked on a 2-stroke! Should be interesting. V.

Blimey you don't hang about, she'll be back on the road for christmas! couple of exhausts here, exhaust 1exhaust 2You might be right Steve. It's all going full steam ahead!! The fork bottoms are at the polishers now, taking frame and fork tubes tomorrow. The tank and plastic-work went to the painters yesterday Thanks for the links. Those exhausts are Fresco "Big One" pipes. They make them for a lot of the 2-stroke off-roaders. They'll do for sure but the expansion chambers are a lot more bulbous than the originals. From photos I've seen they don't look quite as good as the originals. I've today managed to score a pipe on EBay from a breaker in Pennsylvania!! I just hope it fits when I get it here!! With all that, and the other bits and pieces I've ordered (seal kits, gaskets, bearings, paints etc etc) I think I've officially paid the same again as I did for the bike itself!! Happy days eh!! V.

Well now!! After so much time, my very much stop-start Yamaha DT project is now done!! The final work has been completed, fluids duly poured into the various orifices, and the battery charged up once again. Fired up third kick and oohhhhh does she sound and smell like a gud 'un!! Between rain showers Ive been out on the road to start the running in process. 38 miles so far and she's running sweet, handles well and even stops pretty good too. Here's some pics of how she's looking now............. Its been a great project and Im fairly proud of resurrecting the old girl and bringing her back to her former '70's glory. Hopefully she'll be around for another 33 years or more! And yes..... its all been very much worth it. Now..... what next I wonder!!! V.

A credit to you, brings back memories of my youth. Are you going to hang onto it or use it to fund the next project?

Cheers chaps!! Steve, there's no way that this one is going near any sand or sea water!! Thats what wrecked the original one I bought in '79. This one is for fine days and showing off only!! Its true Nods, when I start this one up and hear (and smell) it singing, I go back in time 33 years! Just like it was yesterday!! Not sure of my long term plans with it yet. Just going to enjoy it for a while and see what pans out. And reap some benefit (on sunny days only!) from the fruits of my labour and depleted bank balance!! V.
