This is where things went down hill again! I decided to clean the head and lap the valves in and found an inlet valve had become pocketed in the seat and the valve guides very worn. You can see on this picture that the edge of the valve is flush into the seat and the valve seat pocketed with the valve removed So the head has been to Lancaster Engines and had the valve seats re-cut, new valves and guides fitted. In my excitement, I forgot to take a photo of the head, but here is a picture of one of the new valves and re-cut seat. The engine is now back in the frame with head and rockers fitted. Got the oil filter refitted and filled the system with oil and kicked her over about 40 times until a good return flow of oil was visible in the tank. Got the Tri-spark refitted and static timed And I have replaced every bullet connector on the bike with new spade type fittings. (The purists will hate it!)

Well it is just about mission accomplished! I spent the weekend in the garage again, and got the old girl back together again. I gave her a tickle, one kick with the clutch in to free the plates, another with the ignition off, and then turned the ignition on and she fired up next kick! Strobed the timing, it just needed advancing a 'gnats nadger' and then took her for a quick road test for about 5 miles. Runs great, no more rumbling from the main bearings, no smoke, and no leaks (yet)! So now I am going to re-torque the head and adjust the tappets again. I have just got the chain guard and the horn to fit and she's done! Here's some pics,

Fantastic job Steve!! Well done and congrats!!. You must be very proud that all your efforts (and expense!!) have produced such an excellent result! Cant wait now to get out on a classic run, but Im going to have to get the polishing gear out on my BSA if Im to anywhere match that beauty now!! Enjoy the running in, and be prepared for lots of admiring looks and comments!! V.

Great work as usual Steve, all you need now is some decent weather. This would be good for you and Graeme to do on your classics, akthough it's quite a trek to the start point in"wukinton"! www.boundary500.co.uk/lakes-classic/
