I've become taken by the vintage racing scene, cages as well as bikes. Attended and worked the Manx GP last year, and have been to a number of vintage auto racing events at Watkins Glen, Lime Rock and at the new NJ Motorsports Park. Really enjoyable events, filled with 'hale fellows well met'
SO I'm thinking of building or buying a vintage bike to dabble on track. Nothing radical, small to mid bore. Any suggestions as to what bike to consider?

Capo, thats the cool thing about "vintage" racing. You pick a class and build/ride anything that fits the class parameters.50s,ok 500s,no problem.Still, expect to get your ass handed to you for a while. Some of those guys are deadly serious about racing. Some, not so much. My favorite bike that day was a Maico 501,3 speed MXer,in supermotard gear. Insane power wheelies.

If your budget's tight try the bucket classes (for bucket of sh!t) which is a fun place to start. If you've got the cash, & want to look & sound good, get any old Brit with a racing pedigree. But if you want to win get a Yamaha TZ.

Go to the AHRMA website and download the PDF of the rules. It's amazing the amount of rules they have in almost every class,as to exactly what is eligible to race in any given class. Some classes require absolute period correctness, which would be pretty expensive for most folks, while other classes give you lots of leeway as to what kinds of brakes, shocks, etc.you are allowed to run. I think that factoring in the rule book, along with your racing budget, and ambition, should help to steer you toward the type of bike you want to race.

Aren't the Royal Enfields still eligible for vintage racing? I'm pretty sure they were a couple of years ago. Sounds like a lot of fun Capo. Good luck.
