Hey Gang, It has been some time since I have been here, but now with the winter setting in, I should be a 'regular' once again. Anyways, I have asked about bike advice here for numerous different possibilities, but enough asking already. I went and pulled the trigger on a '73 Daytona back in the summer. After a fluid change and alot of kicking, I got it around the block for a spin...what a hoot! The electrical (lights) were NFG, and when I tried to rewire with a new harness, well let's just say it would be easier to hide a nuke in my backyard then do that. So as it currently sits, it is in pieces waiting to be, or has already had powder coating, paint, polish, grease etc etc...I have a due date of April to have it legally on the road. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAlAYA6wNm8Oh, and the 2 Trail Blazer 250's have left for greener pastures So that is a quick update. I will post more in the coming weeks. Attachments:

Yeah, good to here from you again hamr. Good find on that Daytona - sounds so beautifully British. It is a diamond in the rough. Back when I first hunted for a Triumph, Daytonas were not so sought after because of the 500cc size - everyone wanted 650's and 750's [bigger is better?] to go faster than a speeding bullet. But they are just cool looking motorcycles, just like their larger counterparts. A great project you've got there and look forward to the end result. Cast your eyes over rmak's '65 beauty for inspiration if needed.

So far, my biggest "What the hell did this guy (previous owner) do!?!" was electrical tape wrapped around the front spring under the gaitor. I guess he had a leak in the front fork, and somehow a generous helping of electrical tape fixed it?
Needless to say, the tape is gone.
The spring on the KS is there, and works, but I am guessing that the pipes in the video are not proper 500 pipes, so the starter would get held up, or down as the case may be. But, if I kicked really fast, it would come back on it's own...Go figure eh.

I will try to get some pics up over Christmas. As it is right now, I have the re-chromed pieces back - both fenders, both rims, front fender stays, pass. grab rail, top and bottom front fork pieces, and tank badges- and man do they look good! I have to try and seal the tank before the painter get's it on fri. I have a few days off, so the plan is to get everything blasted, then off for some p/c...That's the plan anyways.

Nice stuff,Mark. Are you going to rebuild the engine, too? It sounded pretty healthy in that utube vid.I'd probably leave it alone for now, myself.

KS lever might be slightly bent.Pretty common on bikes where the peg folds at the top.My Commando was bent a little and did exactly the same thing.Might be able to prang it back out with a hammer(off the bike,of course ).Tried that on mine, but couldn't get it to bend.Had to get a new(old)one.Nortons are a bear to kick through, compared to Triumphs, though,so the Triumph arm might be a bit more malleable.

Hey Blues,
The engine: I am not going to touch the bottom end, that I know for sure. The top end...I dunno. The frame, and all parts have been powder-coated, or rechromed, so to have the top end looking as shabby as it does would look very out of place. I am not going for a 100, 50, or even a 25 point restore, but something that 'looks' correct and sweet would be nice. Saying that, the engine will be cleaned up substantially while in one piece. So a nice bike with a crappy engine...doesn't really sit right. But as you said, it sounds (and runs) right, so why muck with it.
The pipes that were on it, I don't belive they were proper oem pipes. I know for '73 they had the straight pipes (everyone calls them different). Anyways, I was UNABLE to look through the exhaust that came with the bike. But when I received the new exhaust...it's like looking through a, well completely open pipe. I cannot wait to hear these. Anyways, I am thinking that the pipes weren't proper for the bike, maybe a 650, but not a 500, or the pipes were 'correct' to a degree. Talking to a vinatge guy around here, he explained the diff in pipes, and they commented that I need to hammer the KS pipe in to aid in return.
The tank should be going to paint this weekend, the remaining parts p/c'd in the next couple of weeks...and then the rebuild starts.

Ok... So I finally got the tank back from the painters. I had said before I am not looking for a 100pt restore, but a nice runner. I left the colour up to the painter, who, decided to match, as best he could, the original. Very happy with it. New tank. Front wheel was done in the garage: Old:
