Ok, So I FINALLY got to work on the rebuild. I have a new respect for mechanics working on any type of vintage forks...those things were a p.i.t.a! Anyways, so far so good. Only lost a couple of bits and bobs along the way which should be resolved by the end of next week. Bad part: the alignment is way off. I tried hitting the head with a hammer, loosening all the bolts and hitting again, grabbing the handlebars, yelling at it, swearing at it, trying to reason with it, apologizing and still nothing...Any of you have any ideas? The quick mock-up looks pretty sweet...that tank just 'pops'

When the front tires is straight, he handlebars go left. It kinda looks like the whole top tree is outta wack. I tried to show it the best I could in the pics. Picture 32/33 show it best. The bars are straight, and the tire is turning right.

I reckon you ruled out an out of whack handle bar?

I reckon you ruled out an out of whack handle bar? Nope...tried that. Even used a hammer, 2x4, the neighbour, my car...it wouldn't budge.

Ok..so the bike is FINALLY done, and I have everything together to take it for a spin to the bank, and then to garage for a safety...but something is wrong. The bike is stuttering and hesitating and I have to keep the revs up to keep the bike alive. I decide to pass on the garage and head home...when it starts to run better, so I think I will go to the garage, when...poof, the bike dies. No notice, warning, nothing. Tried kicking, and it feels like the compression has dropped....
I am thinking pistons/rings. Anyone with more knowledge have a better understanding / idea?

First thing I would check is the battery, and the wires to the battery, particularly the earth(ground)side, which in this case will be the wire to the positive side of the battery.Check the state of charge of the battery. It needs to have 12.5 volts,or pretty close to it.Check the battery cables for corrosion at the battery, and on the other end as well, and check to make sure that the bolt on the earth cable is secure where it bolts to the frame.
It actually sounds to me like you may have a charging system problem, but start with the battery.Put a nice slow charge on it,overnight. If it doesn't make it to 12.5 volts, get a new one.If it's some crazy thing like 14 volts or something,it's probably bad, too. Here's a quick way to check the condition of the battery.Hook up your volt meter.Turn on the headlight, and monitor the volt meter for about 2 minutes. If it drops much below 12 volts,it's fubar.Cut your losses and get a new one.If it stays around or above 12 volts for 2 minutes, shut off the light, and monitor the voltmeter again. It should climb back up to 12.5(or very close) within half a minute or so.If not,the battery is bad,and will keep you chasing demons until you replace it.
Seriously, these symptoms sound like a charging/battery problem to me.Eliminate this, and if you still have the problem,We will start all over again.
Ron(Midnite)will be along with the real answer soon.

So...after doing all my errands today, I started playing with the Daytona. Changed the battery, and wouldn't you know, light is bright, and the bike started right up...twice. So...it's going for it's safety on wed.
Thanks Blues.

Well...
Took the bike out tonight, and it is seriously lacking in power. I understand they are bikes of yesteryear, but I am thinking now that something is wrong within the engine. Just has no pull, in any gear. The best I can get is approx 35-40 mph, and that is going downhill.
Any advice on where to start looking would be great.

yeah well these things must be right. spark timing. ignition timing. valve adjustment. good compression. your carbs must be set correctly and spotlessly clean correct cutaways, no loose slides, correct jetting ect.. (esp pilot mixture) basically if u have compression, the engines timed correctly, a healthy spark, clean fuel the correct plugs fitted carbs set correctly and in good condition, no faulty wiring, no blocked air filter, ect the thing will go like a train...

It sounds like maybe your automatic advance is not working. The first thing I would check is to seee if you are getting,if memory serves, about 38 degress total advance.Check that figure,I'm going by fuzzy memory. The AAU works with springs and bob weights,so it's common for them to get stuck to their pivot shafts.
These bikes are timed at total advance.Don't worry about the timing at idle.Scream the engine at 3000 rpm and check it there.

If possible, I will try to get the cameras going so you can see, and hear first hand what is going on...
Off to read the manual.
