check out this nifty Biltwell Stash Tube my buddy mounted to the underside of the seat. He said it's for "registration", but he also said "you put your weed in there, man"

that's outstanding! what do you figure it will be worth? maybe this is your new gig? I think the only thing holding this bike's value back is the engine size. I don't think a 25 year old 550cc Jap Bike could be worth more than $1500-2000, maybe $2500 if the seller was lucky. My buddy doesn't care, he's a pretty light dude and he's never really ridden a motorcycle before. As far as doing this for money, once I get my feet on the ground I plan to pickup another project bike, I kinda want a kz1000 shaft-drive, and I'll give it a similar treatment, ride it a bit, sell it, buy another/build/sell/etc and on and on. Hopefully I'll get to the point where I can ride and build some kickass bikes and it won't cost me any money. If I can actually make some money from the work it would be an extra bonus!

there's the karma point I promised you!
I'd be very curious to see a parts/price list of what you've done item by item.
just very cool and a very cool way for your pal to get a bike.

Let's just say my buddy got REALLY lucky in this deal. I'm unemployed right now, enjoying a nice welfare/unemployment vacation while I'm looking for a job (read: trying to figure out what the F to do with my life), and he's a student and is off for winter break. The timing was perfect. I probably have somewhere between 40-60 hours of my own time in this thing, plus he's put in just as many of his own. Not to mention almost all of the tools of mine we've used. He's gotten a ton of free labor off me, but I've enjoyed every bit, plus since I moved out of the house I shared with the ex he's let me store all my tools etc at his place which has been a huge help. I've known the guy for 10 years and I'd trust him with anything I own, so it's been pretty comforting to have all my stuff at his house. Just the free storage alone has been worth my efforts. Plus, I get to delegate all the shitty jobs I don't want to do to him!

read: trying to figure out what the F to do with my life Well that's always tricky. I hesitate to say it, but you could consider engineering in some form or another. There are many branches, and you clearly understand materials and manufacturing, plus you have a natural understanding of how to make things fit and work together. There are loads of branches to engineering, and it can be rewarding, especially if you can find a small company to work for. That's what I eventually did, which means I can keep my hand in on real engineering while also doing the pointy haired boss bit. Just a thought, but you may as well try and find something that uses your hands on skills somehow, that way you can wear the grin from your first welding pic while you're being paid. It's a good trick if you can a job that you enjoy. The bike looks totally excellent, much better than its original form!

Thanks for the suggestions Prop! Today we got the front brake bled and mounted the newly-painted rear fender. It is basically 100% assembled with only a few loose ends. We discovered a leak in the gas tank where a rudimentary fuel level sensor was once mounted, so we JB Welded the hole shut and are waiting for the JB Weld to cure before we put gas in the tank. We should be able to actually ride the thing tomorrow. I'm sure it will need some tuning/jetting work done as we kinda guessed at the jetting based on the mods we did (86'd the airbox, new emgo pipes, etc). Here's how she looks all together: Fingers crossed! We're riding tomorrow!

Ooyah! Looks great. Love the paint scheme, totally suits the streetfighter look, nice and straightforward. Are you going to add any kind of front fender, or do you like it as is?
Can't wait to hear how it runs - looking forward to a report on that!

Nice!!! Brings back memories of my first street bike...an LTD 440 that I bought new in '82. I thought it was bad ass. Now when I look back at it, it looks f'ing dorky. You did a good job turnin a dorky bike, into a bad ass bike.

Aww man - cool as cool. Baddazz little machine. You seem more adroit on ti than your bud. Was that really only his second time riding a bike? I gotta make me one of them!
